Exploring Leadership Program

Exploring Leadership (EL) is a yearlong high school internship program that focuses on civic leadership and activism with an emphasis on education policies in New York City Public Schools.

• As one of two program facilitators -in the role of mentor and educator- design and create weekly educational experiences for 26 High School students that are intended to provide a foundation in New York City government and education policy, while helping to develop leaderships skills (such as public speaking, organization and time management) that students can utilize as young civic leaders working as agents of change in their school communities.
• Monitor student progress both at school and in EL through weekly meetings with school liaisons as well as periodic written student evaluation and assessment.

Vanguard High School Museum Studies Elective, Fall 2003-2004

Developed and facilitated year-long expansion of an 8-week program designed to introduce students to the Whitney Museum, and prepare students to give oral presentations in the Museum’s galleries (see below).

Vanguard High School/Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum Studies Collaborative, Spring 2002-2003

Facilitated an 8-week program designed to introduce students to the Whitney Museum and expose them to works of art through the Museum’s Permanent Collection and temporary exhibitions.

Introduced students to the Museum as a community resource for learning.

Prepared students to give oral presentations which allowed them to share their experiences and discoveries, with others, in front of actual works of art in the galleries of the Museum.
Harvey Milk High School, Spring 2000-2002

Facilitated an interdisciplinary learning experience designed to infuse art into the traditional academic curriculum and classroom setting.

Collaborated with school’s instructional staff to develop creative ways of using art as a tool for teaching.

Facilitated regular guided tours of the Museum’s Permanent Collection and temporary exhibitions designed to correlate with concepts being introduced in the classroom.
Museum Educator

Conducted guided tours for students and teachers, incorporating object and observation based learning techniques.

Facilitated Educator Workshops developed to introduce primary and secondary school educators to new and innovative of ways of using the Museum’s Permanent Collection and exhibitions as tools for teaching in their classrooms.

Conducted Professional Development Workshops which expanded on the Educator Workshops to include guided tours and hands-on activities.

Participated in the facilitation of the Family Fun Workshops, which included intergenerational guided tours and hands-on art making projects.

Participated in the development of interdisciplinary curriculum, related to the school’s focus and the exhibitions on view at SMH; developed and conducted tours for FLH students integrating concepts introduced in the classroom.

In-class instruction and implementation (two days per week).

Participated in the development of program assessment strategies, prepared weekly reports and

gathered statistical data.Led staff development workshops for FLH teachers and participated in weekly Humanities Team planning meetings.

Worked with FLH staff to conceptualize and install year-end student exhibition.
Expanding The Walls, Summer 2002-2003

Assisted in the development and facilitation of a photography-based exploratory program envisioned to help students make connections between history and community through the use of the camera.

Prepared students to give intergenerational tours and presentations on the Museum’s Permanent Collection, temporary exhibitions and the James VanDerZee Collection/ Archive.

Worked with students to conceptualize a culminating exhibition of their work and the work of James VanDerZee, mounted in the galleries of SMH.
