Artist Statement
My art works are based on printing, painting and drawing, and in recent years I have been engaged in two dimensional works with time based participatory aspect. I am focusing on universal ideas, emotions and desires among people from different cultures and political backgrounds.
Video 1 : SAYHEY & BECKY
Video 2 : I DANCE THEREFORE I AM-WOMEN PARTICIPANTS
My exhibition, entitled I DANCE THEREFORE I AM was an interactive film shoot for the video of the same name. This participatory art show was produced in following process. I transformed the gallery space into a filming studio and welcomed the participants who volunteered to dance in long johns implying intimacy. I filmed the participants’ dancing while I danced off to the side also in long johns. After the exhibition was ended, I edited each participant’s dance footage and transformed it into two different kind of video works. SAYHEY & BECKY was made in order to visualize myself and the participant dancing both in the screen. In the other video of I DANCE THEREFORE I AM-WOMEN PARTICIPANTS, I chose to show only the women participants’ dance moves without any sound.
Video 3 : ABOUT ERASING
THE ERASED was an audience participatory art exhibition. Before the show I drew lots of figures on the wall to portray my imaginary scenes of lust, abuse, guilt, gluttony, and anger which are the subconscious desires of human being. In the show I then asked the audience to erase whatever figures they chose. During the show I interviewed the audience asking them what they erased and why they chose them. This video, ABOUT ERASING is a selection of my such interviews.
Video 4 : WASH AWAY
For a three-week exhibition at Richard & Dolly Maass gallery, I painted a mural on a gallery wall to display it during the show. The mural was inspired by a biblical story of the Old testaments, Noah’s Flood. When the exhibition ended, I erased the mural using sponges, sandpapers and water and then painted it white paint. The process of erasing and painting were self reflective gestures of moving forward from the remnants of the past.
