Artist Statement
Most of my recent work plays and investigates the public distribution of images. This, which is obvious in my portfolio of images, heavily uses the internet. I would however not strictly categorize my work as "internet art," but more of as an exploration of contemporary strategies of image circulation. The first body of images are from a project titled Public Access. I drove up the entire California coast, a coast that is public property, and made photographs of different beaches and coastal access points. All of the images had my body somewhere in the landscape. These photographs were then placed on the Wikipedia articles about the specific geographic locations where the photographs were taken (the internet being another form of a public space). My photographs, which included my body, would not only illustrate the articles, but would become vulnerable to open sourcing, editing and re-circulation. The texts are from conversations that emerged between Wikipedia editors debating whether my photographs had violated the rules of Wikipedia. Included are also variations and derivatives of this project: some with my body near historical monuments, or my hand on gravestones. In another work, I made an announcement for people to photograph their heads in freezers, and then upload the photograph to the internet with the tag, 241543909. Here, the work was not specifically about the content of the photograph, but about the tag as a means for both distribution and searching/filtering. Here the image's meta-data becomes as important as the image itself. In Rarely Seen Bas Jan Ader Film, I used Youtbe to distribute a supposed found Ader film where he rides a bicycle into the ocean. For A Brief Time Only, was a multi-artist collaborative project, in which I distributed "exhibitions" of 24 artists. The exhibitions were sent to the photo-labs of drugstores around the world. Anyone could request seeing the exhibit, and I would then send the images to print at a drug-store near them - whether in Manhattan, or in Anchorage, AK. Like Public Access and For A Brief Time Only, much of my practice investigates a place where the internet and the physical world meet.

Untitled, 2011. Derivative of Public Access project, images made while in Copenhagen for an exhibition there. Images were placed on both the English and Danish Wikipedia articles for the man-made beach in Copenhagen.
Communar'ds Wall, 2011. Image made for Communard's Memorial in Paris, and posted online. Notice body standing at the left margin of the photograph.

Rarely Seen Bas Jan Ader Film, 2007. A fake Bas Jan Ader film that circulated online via Youtube. A short believable story as to how the video was found accompanied the posting. This is a screenshot of the second reposting, after the gallery who represents Ader's estate asked Youtube to remove the video for "copyright violations."
Rarely Seen Bas Jan Ader Film, 2009, still from flip book put out by 2nd Cannons Publications in Los Angeles. The aforementioned film was made into a small artist book modeled after a flip book.

For A Brief Time Only, 2009. Project's information:

For a Brief Time Only... is a purchasable exhibition of 24 artists available at a photo developer near you. You can find it at any store that allows file uploading via the internet (including most major US drug-stores). The image files will be sent to the closest location near you, and within minutes you will be able to walk in and pick them up as prints.

This exhibition contains 24 small 4x6 photographic prints contained within the packaging provided by each store. Also included are a contact sheet with all the artists' information, and a letter to the store employee reassuring that there is nothing wrong with the order.

Head in Freezer Meme, 2009. During the 2009 year I would post instructional art works everyday to a blog. This one, asking people to photograph their heads in a freezer, and tag the photo with a long string of numbers, aimed to explore how tagging becomes a means of both searching, and also surreptitiously distributing information. Unintentionally, this blew up and became an internet meme.

Thinking About You, 2009. For $1 I think about people for a minute. I send them an email when I start and when I end. Value online is determined by attention. Here, I turn the attention, my attention, around toward the participant.
